Between February and June 2026, the Signature Hair Restoration research team compiled graft count data from published clinical benchmarks, ISHRS census results, and zone-specific surgical planning frameworks. A graft (also called a follicular unit) is a naturally occurring bundle of one to four hairs.
One important distinction: a graft is not the same as a hair. Each graft averages 2.0 to 2.2 hairs, meaning a 2,000-graft procedure typically delivers approximately 4,000-4,400 individual hairs.

FU/cm² = follicular units per square centimeter. Natural scalp density is 80–120 FU/cm²; transplant procedures target 25–50 FU/cm², which clinical data shows creates visually indistinguishable fullness.

The frontal and hairline zone carries the highest graft priority in any session. When donor supply is limited, experienced surgeons address the frontal zone first: the crown, left untreated, is far less cosmetically apparent than a receding hairline. Reversing this priority is a common planning error.
Temple restoration is the most technically demanding zone, requiring single-hair grafts placed at near-flat angles of 5–10 degrees to replicate the natural forward-sweeping growth pattern. Only single-hair follicular units are appropriate; multi-hair grafts in this zone produce an unnatural appearance.
Crown restoration is often intentionally reserved for a second session. Crown loss typically continues to progress after an initial procedure, and committing too many grafts to the vertex in session one can leave a patient without adequate donor supply to address future hairline recession.
